Astaxanthin is a lipid-soluble carotenoid antioxidant. It is derived from Haematococcus pluvialis, a natural marine microalgae. It is outstanding in helping skin defend against free radicals and oxidative stress. Its molecular structure enables it to interact across lipid membranes, where it helps quench singlet oxygen and limit lipid oxidation. In laboratory testing, astaxanthin demonstrated up to 6,000 times the singlet-oxygen-quenching activity of vitamin C.¹

Astaxanthin is a lipid-compatible carotenoid that helps defend sebum, barrier lipids, and cell membranes against oxidative stress. An astaxanthin serum therefore complements water-compatible antioxidants by extending support into lipid-rich environments.
